Elizabeth, New Jersey, is enjoying restored traffic
islands thanks to a collaboration between Groundwork Elizabeth, the City of
Elizabeth and other groups. Groundwork Elizabeth, as part of a network of
Groundwork USA Trusts, has as its mission “improving places,
improving lives.” Their projects have not only upgraded the beauty of
the city, but have also bolstered the self-esteem of those living around
them.
One such project is Elmora Hills, where Groundwork
Elizabeth, in cooperation with the City of Elizabeth, the National Park
Service Rivers and Trails Assistance Program, the Master Gardeners of Union
County, and the Elmora Hills community, worked together to transform a
gateway traffic island from a green colored asphalt covered corner into a
beautiful garden-like mini-park.

A property located on a bank of the East River and in a densely developed residential and commercial area, had its work cut out for it from an environmental remediation standpoint. The mission was to clean up the land and ultimately make one puzzle piece to a larger urban revitalization project that would be redeveloped as a public library and park ranger station.
