In Massachusetts, a multi-agency team is evaluating
transportation-oriented development opportunities surrounding major
transportation hubs. Building on the success of state brownfields and
cleanup programs, and the creative partnerships built at all levels, the
potential for the integration of brownfields and transportation-oriented
development are endless.
The direct connection between revitalized transit
stations and their positive effects on adjacent underutilized property has
become increasingly obvious as “smart growth” practices are
integrated into international planning and development. The past decade has
seen a powerful teaming of environmental, economic development, and
transportation entities. As a result, the demand for, and design and reuse
of, underutilized property increasingly are shaped by proximity to transit
stations.

A property located on a bank of the East River and in a densely developed residential and commercial area, had its work cut out for it from an environmental remediation standpoint.
