By KC Mayor Barnes

In the article about
Kansas City in the January/February issue of Brownfield News there are some
inaccuracies and omissions of important facts. First, the article pictured
former Mayor Emanuel Cleaver II; however, the current mayor of Kansas City,
Mo. is Kay Barnes. There are also a number of success stories that were not
mentioned. One example is the Sunshine Biscuit Bakery project.
The bakery was destroyed by a major fire in 1998, and
its asbestos-laden remains inhibited development in an already distressed
urban industrial area that has suffered plant closures and floods,
resulting in the loss of tens of thousands of jobs, neglected
infrastructure and, of course, many brownfields. The Federal Economic
Development Administration has invited Kansas City, Missouri to seek a $1
million grant to remove the blight and rehabilitate area storm water
drainage capacity. Extensive coordination with federal, state and local
agencies and private businesses have yielded plans, funding and tentative
commitments to clean up and place a new 80,000 sq. foot light industrial
facility on this site. The project is anticipated to stimulate $22 million
in new capital investment, create and retain over 1,000 jobs, and lay the
groundwork for several other redevelopment projects in the area. In
addition, this project has convinced several key businesses, including
Kansas City-based Faultless Starch/Bon Ami, to stay and grow rather than
move to one of many suburban industrial parks.

Brownfield Stateside Report

In Michigan, some are predicting a better business climate for redevelopment and regulatory closure of contaminated properties thanks to a bill Michigan Governor Rick Snyder was scheduled to sign last week. The new regulations should have a positive impact on commercial real estate development and brownfields redevelopment resulting in the creation of jobs. |

A property located on a bank of the East River and in a densely developed residential and commercial area, had its work cut out for it from an environmental remediation standpoint. The mission was to clean up the land and ultimately make one puzzle piece to a larger urban revitalization project that would be redeveloped as a public library and park ranger station.
