While issues such as education, health care, and
military preparedness dominate the presidential campaign, brownfields, and
related issues such as sprawl, rebuilding industry, job creation, and
environmental policy, are also part of the debate. Brownfield News’
effort to delve into the presidential candidates’ thinking on
brownfields we have reported on Gov. George W. Bush’s comments on the
subject, and we recorded Vice President Al Gore’s brownfield
position. In response to our inquiries, Green Party candidate Ralph Nader
provided us with his statement on brownfields.
Brownfield sites with the
greatest potential for rejuvenation need to be identified through a
coordinated national effort. Parties responsible for polluting these sites
must be identified and held liable for the cleaning costs. For orphaned
sites without identifiable responsible parties, the government should
provide financial assistance for cleanup.

A property located on a bank of the East River and in a densely developed residential and commercial area, had its work cut out for it from an environmental remediation standpoint. The mission was to clean up the land and ultimately make one puzzle piece to a larger urban revitalization project that would be redeveloped as a public library and park ranger station.
