Information Tourniquet

Information is the blood of any marketplace. Information lets traders and developers know how to deal, how to act, and how to plan. The brownfield market is no different from any market—information is what keeps the brownfield market functioning. That’s why it was distressing when …

The Broker Beauty Pageant

Illustrations by Charlie Smith Why is this such an important choice? Anyone can photocopy your application, mail it to several environmental insurance underwriters, and send you back quotations. While this may be acceptable for your homeowner’s policy, environmental risk management is significantly more complicated, with much more at risk, including dollars, reputation, and even jail time. The role of the environmental insurance broker in this millennium is that of a partner, a …

City RoundUp 2000

When Brownfield News began examining brownfield policy and development on a city-by-city basis in 1998 it was obvious that there was no single, one-size-fits-all approach. The history and economy of different cities led to different kinds of industrial development and consequently to the creation of different kinds of brownfields. In some …

As brownfield sites have become a priority topic for a growing range of players — from city agencies to corporate leaders as well as environmental activists — so has their treatment in state legislatures and agencies across the US. States are taking an increasingly active role in promoting the identification, …

Brownfields - State of the States Report

Brownfields continue to be one of the most dynamic and complicated development issues that governments at all levels face. During 1999, the “state of the state” of brownfields continued to evolve and mature. State-level creativity and innovation in meeting a wide range of brownfield site assessment, cleanup, and financing needs has been the hallmark of this issue. Many viable — and alternative — approaches have been put …

Federal Resource Guide

Federal Resource Guide While states and cities are in the forefront of brownfield development, the federal government has a large number of programs scattered through many agencies that deal with brownfield issues. As expected, the EPA´has taken the lead, but others, such as Housing and Urban Development, the Department of Defense and the Economic Development Administration also play important roles. Other agencies, such as the National …

A Summit on Eastern European Brownfields Ostrava, located in the eastern portion of the Czech Republic, near Poland and Slovakia, is a much more attractive town than some believe. Despite being characterized by the Lonely Planet guide as a Soviet throwback, it more like a Central European Pittsburgh, a steel town cleaning its air, land and water, finding some architectural treasures, and building some new ones. In June, I had the pleasure …
