Ground Breakers

Brett Davidson, President and CEO, Wavefront Technology Solutions, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
You could say that Wavefront Technology Solutions' Brett Davidson and his team like to go with the flow. The company's Primawave technology is becoming a compelling solution in the marketplace as project managers are able to see underground remediation projects completed faster and more economically.

Davidson and his co-inventors conducted innovative physical research 12 years ago examining ways to make fluids flow more easily underground. They discovered that sending powerful bursts of fluid would momentarily expand the pore structure of rock and soil to allow liquids, such as remedial solutions, to flow more easily and evenly underground.

They used this discovery to develop the Primawave tool, which attaches to injection pumps to precisely and effectively direct remedial treatments to be in close contact with underground contaminants. Compared to conventional injection methods, Primawave reduces the number of injection points needed, and reduces or eliminates failed injection points due to remedial fluid surfacing. In the end, projects get completed faster with fewer costs.

Wavefront has distributed this technology across the United States and Canada, and recently brought it to Denmark and Australia, said Davidson, adding that he has plans to expand even further as he seeks distributors and business opportunities around the world.

"The technology works simply and pays for itself with the efficiency it brings," said Davidson. "We've worked hard to develop Primawave so it is easy to use and make adjustments based on soil condition to deliver great results."

Heidi Wellen, Internal Operations Manager, Gateway Environmental Service Inc., Highland, IL
Raised in the demolition world, Wellen had an enviable inside track on what makes the demolition industry tick. "I used to beg my dad (a demolition practitioner) to teach me how to run a machine, and even told him once I would labor on a project," she explains. "As his oldest daughter it always got a laugh out of him but he never did take me seriously about that, and never let me do anything other than sit in a machine that was not running." Wellen made up for lost time later. After working in her father's office, attending graphic design school and then working for financial services provider A.G. Edwards (now owned by Wachovia) for seven years, she eventually started Gateway Enviro with her husband, Brian, also a demolition practitioner. Today they are partners in Gateway Environmental Services, which does $3 million a year in business, with most work performed in the Midwest and Southern states. "Brian and I work together to start and close out projects," she adds. Wellen's lifelong experience in the demolition industry has paid dividends not only reflected in the company's success but through recognition by her peers: In April, she was one of seven people elected to t he National Demolition Association (Doylestown, Pa.) board of directors. "I'm excited to be on the board, which will enable me to better meet people in the industry and offer my ideas to hopefully help different aspects in the demolition world," she concludes.

Stephen S. Koenigsberg, Ph.D., Vice President, Adventus Americas, Inc., Irvine, Calif.
When Koenigsberg recently joined Adventus, a leader in soil, sediment, and groundwater remediation technology, it represented the teaming of two entities that have a firm handle on developing and cultivating remediation technology. Dr. Koenigsberg is well-known for his contributions to in situ remediation and site diagnostics and is eager to bring Adventus technical advancements in various areas of the environmental sciences.

"I have always been impressed with Adventus' leadership in the area of applied environmental remediation technologies," Koenigsberg said. "The quality of the company's people and their proven technologies, as well as their consistent focus on good science and the best business practices, attracted me."

With expertise in evolving integrative programs that support rapid site remediation and closure for what is still a substantial world-wide inventory of environmentally impacted sites, Koenigsberg more recently worked to advance protocols to expedite site closure, which represents an important part of the future of this industry.

Koenigsberg joins Adventus from his recent position as a Principal at ENVIRON, an international environmental consultantcy practice. He began his career in environmental remediation as a co-founder and VP for R&D with Regenesis where he co-invented and developed the company's remediation products. He received his M.S. and Ph.D. from Cornell University and is an Adjunct Professor at the California State University at Fullerton, where he also serves as Chairman of the Dean's Advisory Council.

"We offer an excellent business platform from which Steve can contribute his leadership to our team in service to the remediation industry," said Dr. Jim Mueller, President of Adventus Americas Inc. "All of our staff, partners, and affiliates around the world look forward to working with Steve as we continue to implement an expanding array of uniquely effective remediation strategies."

Andrea Reveile, Vice President, A & R Demolition, Del Valle, Texas
Having been involved with the demolition industry for 17 years, Reveile said it was "an honor" being elected to the board of the National Demolition Association, which occurred in April. Reveile is also part of the NDA Environmental Committee to add to her experience. "I have gained being in the industry as well as furthering my knowledge on all the new guidelines and what is in store for the future."

A & R Demolition is a family owned and run business founded by Andrea and Raymond Reveile. "As a husband and wife team I have an active role in all aspects of our demolition company and the industry as well. We have two teenage daughters who are already taking an interest in the industry and our company," comments Reveile.

The parent office is in Del Valle, Texas, and the firm works statewide as well as the entire Southwest region of the U.S. The environment and "going green" has always been a philosophy that A & R Demolition has abided by vigorously. "I am all about incorporating our past into the future and recycling as many materials as possible. I am always looking for new ways to recycle products that are not mainstream items."

One of the firm's largest projects was the much-heralded Texas Stadium in Irving, Texas, home of the Dallas Cowboys. A& R Demolition, which is a member of the NDA, AGC & BBB, imploded Texas Stadium in April 2010, to make ready for new development and highways in the area. "In demolition we have experienced many challenges and worked a wide range of sites, including Brownfield sites. We are familiar with the risks, but also have the crews and experience to get the project completed on time and safely. Whether it is a contaminated site or clean, A & R Demolition can handle all aspects and leave the site ready for new development."

Reveile, who also owns and manages a woman-owned certified general contracting firm in addition to managing A & R Demolition, concludes: "The demolition industry is my passion and I look forward to new opportunities and becoming active in additional organizations."
