Southwest: Marina Gateway Hotel

LOCATION: Bay Marina Drive, Harbor DistrictNational City, Calif.
SIZE: 6.5 acres.
SITE BACKGROUND: The site had been an undocumented landfill, slaughter house and auto dismantler until 1999 when it was acquired through eminent domain by the National City Community Development Commission.
FEATURES: The project will open in June 2009, including a 174,000-room Marina Gateway hotel, 16,000 square foot retail building and 4,000 square foot Busters Restaurant.
COST: $29 million.
PROJECT TEAM: National City Community Development Commission; San Diego County Dept. of Environmental Health; Sycuan Tribal Development; MRW Group; U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service; and Port of San Diego.
SYNOPSIS: The Community Development Commission accomplished remediation of the site and restoration of a portion of the federal marsh habitat through the following: a memorandum of understanding with the Port of San Diego; a grant from California Integrated Waste Management Board; settlement of a California Polanco Act lawsuit against responsible parties; cooperative agreement with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service; local property tax increment funds; and environmental oversight by San Diego County Department of Environmental Health.
