Southeast: PoliciesALABAMA The first step towards this goal has been the development of the ADEM GIS Site Inspector, an interactive, multi-faceted web-based technology that allows developers to locate brownfields in Alabama and easily access a wide range of data about the site including former business, potential contaminants, estimated costs, liability waivers and more. This tool has the capability to promote the range of brownfield properties located throughout the state and enable developers to get the information they need to determine interest in properties without a typical bureaucratic delay. The ultimate hope is that the ADEM GIS Site Inspector will help encourage and speed the redevelopment of Alabama's brownfields, thus resulting in a cleaner, safer, more beautiful and economically enriched Alabama. With the passage of the Brownfields law, funds were made available to the Environmental Protection Agency for grant awards to states and tribes for activities under Section 128 (a). This funding is being used for the establishment and enhancement of the state Brownfields programs which will allow ADEM to develop a Brownfields inventory, establish a public record, and perform assessment activities. ADEM is working closely with many local, regional, and state groups to achieve these commitments.
