The EPA and the Economic Development
Administration (EDA) have renewed a 1995
memorandum of understanding (MOU) establishing a general working agreement
between the EPA and the Commerce Dept.’s EDA. The agreement helps
them to coordinate their policies and activities in support of brownfield
assessment and cleanup, community revitalization, and economic
redevelopment efforts. The objective is to enhance interagency cooperation
and collaboration in keeping with the respective agencies’ environmental protection and economic development objectives.
The agreement, signed by Marianne Horinko of the EPA and the
EDA’s David Sampson states that the two agencies will work together on strategy,
linking assessment with redevelopment opportunities, and redevelopment
research, among other joint actions.
Screen Play
The EPA is offering a remediation technology screening
matrix. The “user-friendly” tool helps to screen for
technologies for a remediation project. The matrix helps users examine 64 in situ and ex situ technologies for either soil
or groundwater remediation. Variables used in screening include
contaminants, development status, overall cost, and cleanup time. In-depth
information on each technology is also available, including direct links to
over 209 cost and performance reports written by members of the Federal Remediation Technologies Roundtable. The matrix is available at
