The Atlanta BeltLine is America’s most ambitious redevelopment—transforming 22 miles of rail encircling Atlanta’s core into transit, trails, parks and affordable housing, reconnecting neighborhoods and creating a world of future opportunity.
When completed, it will ultimately connect 45 in-town neighborhoods, provide first and last mile connectivity for regional transportation initiatives, and put Atlanta on a path to 21st century economic growth and sustainability.
One of the key distinctions of the Atlanta BeltLine is that it offers not only modern conveyances within a dynamic development, according to the project stakeholders, but it is “a living, breathing part of the community; not simply a means of getting somewhere, but a destination unto itself.”
Atlanta BeltLine offers a chance for Atlanta to redefine what it is to be a neighbor, to be a community, to be a region, and to share all that it has to offer, according to stakeholders.
First conceived as a 1999 master’s thesis by Georgia Tech student Ryan Gravel, the Atlanta BeltLine evolved from an idea, to a grassroots campaign of local citizens and civic leaders, into a robust new vision of an Atlanta dedicated to an integrated approach to transportation, land use, greenspace, and sustainable growth.
In September, stay tuned for a detailed case study that will be dropped within the web content lineup that plans to detail progress updates on BeltLine, as there is still work to be done before it's completely on line. The case study will delve into the vision that drove the ambitious project—a vision that was marked by supreme collaboration and innovation.
