The official start of spring is upon us, and as we begin to emerge into a time of green grass and flowers, I thought I would take a look at remediation strategies with a springtime theme. The first thing that came to mind was phytoremediation, or the use of plants for remediation purposes… ah, the greening of a Brownfield!
Phytoremediation is a great strategy for areas with lower concentrations of contaminants or in larger areas where contaminants are present at shallow depths. Additionally, phytoremediation can be utilized in a number of ways, either alone, as an interim stabilization measure, or to augment other remediation technologies. There are often significant financial savings associated with utilizing plants as part of a clean-up strategy, and let’s not forget the aesthetic appeal!
