Management of contaminated soil and groundwater during redevelopment projects can be easily and effectively addressed. Barry Giroux of GEI Consultants, Inc. cautions that soil and groundwater management are often not properly evaluated or they are evaluated too late in the design process to maximize cost effective solutions. Barry says, " When extra costs and schedule impacts result during construction and severely impair a project, more often than not the problem is poor planning and inefficient oversight of contaminated materials management activities."
Giroux advises that redevelopment projects need a thorough understanding of: applicable regulations, the nature and extent of contaminated materials, and reuse and disposal options. Meaningful interaction between the environmental consultant and the A/E design team is also needed, as early in the process as possible. Understanding and interaction are critical to controlling the cost and risk associated with the management of contaminated materials.
