Liability Becomes a Valuable Asset
The cost for landfill capping and closure was paid by
Dickinson Development, which purchased the land for $3 million. The project
also received a Brownfields Redevelopment Access to Capital (BRAC) cash
subsidy for environmental insurance. The town now receives local property
tax revenues of over $620,000 annually, and Walkers Brook Crossing supports
1,000 retail jobs.
As Reading Town Manager Peter Hechenbleikner says,
“The Walkers Brook Crossing project has benefited the town of Reading
in so many ways. This major entrance to our town was an embarrassing
eyesore. Now we’re enjoying a lively retail area—a prominent
new gateway to the town.”
