When BJ’s Wholesale Club observed the grand opening of its Brookfield store on December 15, 2012, the entire brownfield community had reason to celebrate. The126,000-sq-ft retail operation was the first project to be built and opened for business under Connecticut’s groundbreaking Brownfield Remediation and Revitalization Program (BRRP), also referred to as the Brownfield Liability Relief Program.

Happy Hollow in Kentucky had been on the state’s list of uncontrolled landfills and considered to be a brownfield. Though no chemicals or hazardous wastes were ever known to have been accepted at the property, the environmental developer went beyond what was required by law to protect the environment. The community has now benefited from the revitalization of the area and the creation of jobs.
